Welcome by Jari Holland Buck Llewellyn Worldwide will be publishing the next version of this important work on advocacy in November 2007. In it, you will find considerably more information and resources that empower you to serve in this vital role. Dr. Samantha Collier, the chief medical officer for HealthGrades, an organization that “objectively rates the performance of almost every acute care hospital in the United States for medical care in cardiac, stroke and pulmonary/respiratory, and surgical areas of orthopedics, vascular and bariatrics” made the following statement in their May 2007 newsletter: “It’s really important to have a family member, or other advocate, at the patient’s bedside. They should be very confident about informing the nursing and hospital staff if the patient’s condition changes – and to notify the staff immediately if changes occur because they know the patient best. Before being admitted, one should also ensure that the hospital has a ‘rapid response’ team in place.”
